Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye As the devastating years of the Second World War march ever closer the beautiful Redcliffe sisters must face their own struggles and navigate the perils of growing up and growing apart Eldest sister
The author does a good job of portraying the events and background of pre WWII Europe and these are brought to life in this story of three British sisters, each with their strengths and flaws but it s mainly their mistakes that come to the surface. It s difficult to like Isobel at first because of her beliefs she s s fascist who is sympathetic to Hitler and she s volatile, outspoken, and manipulative at times and rubbing elbows with Nazis That is until she sees Jewish storefronts smashed , proper [...]
This book has been sitting on my shelf waiting to be read for far too long I took it away to Corfu with me and was absolutely entranced by the story of the three Redcliffe sisters This is wonderfully written, with expertly imagined characters, set against the horrors of both the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.Beginning in Spain as the fighting gets fiercer, Isabel and Felicity find themselves holed up in a cottage These two sisters are as different as chalk and cheese, with differing [...]
I liked the idea of this book, especially the time and place But the follow through didn t impress me There are three sisters Isabel is domineering and brash, Chiara is the sweet loveable sister who always believes in the good in people Felicity is the sister who is trying to find herself, and she looks in a lot of wrong places. This is the story of how their lives intertwine during the early days of World War II I felt like it did some historical justice, with all of the information about Fascis [...]
XXX I received this book as a Giveaway on August 13 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Marius Gabriel Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye is a book I wanted to read as soon as I saw it Thank you for allowing me to read your work This novel was a very interesting read The background Spain, Germany and England before and during the Second World War, was intricately woven, and the troop movements and timing of battles both in the Spanish Revolution and WWII were spot on My only complaint was the so [...]
This novel is a gripping tale of three British sisters, all very different and the way that their lives diverge as a result of war.The novel starts off set in 1930s Spain which is racked by Civil War Beautiful Isobel, the oldest is headstrong and devil may care, however beneath her seeming conceit, lies pain and disappointment With her is her sister, Felicity, demure, meek and mild, she is devoutly religious and is set to enter a Convent as a noviciate nun, that is until she meets a dashing Amer [...]
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review The story plows the lives of the three Redcliffe sisters from the Spanish Civil War through the Early 1940s Chair a is a London socialite who falls in love with an older man Isobel has been abandoned in Spain by her husband and must travel to safety in Valencia with her sister Felicity and an American soldier Felicity is determined to enter A convent despite the objections of her sisters As war rages around them, my h [...]
I won this book from This is a book about the three British Radcliffe sisters and takes place at the start of WW11 Isobel is leaning towards Fascism, Chiara is interested in faith, and Felicity has her own path They are very different in nature but WW11 shakes them and their beliefs up They struggle with staying together in one piece I do not know how the book ends because there is not an ending Maybe a second book is coming out It is a good book but I wish the author would say at the start thi [...]
This is an amazing coming of age story narrated by 3 sisters living in Europe during WWII Each sister is a strong character and not like her sisters Each woman must try to make her way in a war torn world, adapting from a comfortable life of leisure to one of rations and brutality.I really enjoyed that each sister narrated parts of the book so you got to see the other sisters through her perspective I also love the viewpoint of young women in London during the war Great book Very glad I read it [...]
Compelling profile of 3womenThe story is set in Europe and England during the first part of WWII It is the profile of 3 women who happen to be sisters You get a real feeling for the war without drowning in it and the women s lives are fully and colorfully portrayed I want to read from this author.
This is a first read from It is an excellent fast read with well developed charactersThe main characters are three very different sisters who have grown up as orphans The time of the work extends from the Spanish Civil War until the entry of America inti WWII.
Loved the book If I can lay my hands on Book 2, I surely will.
Loved this Suspenseful, great characters Finished in 2 days because I had to see what would happen next Can t wait for book 2
Loved this book Strong characters and a sisterly approach to family drama It takes place in Spain during the civil war in 1936 Two sisters are trapped in a cottage when an American soldier steals vegetables from their garden The older sister, Isabelle, is fierce and insists that the soldier bring the food back but his friend has already taken it to the castle they are living in turns out the castle belongs to Isabelle s husband William Willoughby, the American soldier, takes pity on the two sist [...]
I really enjoyed the concept of following 3 very different sisters through the start of WW II The author does a great job creating a picture of London before and during the air raids However, I felt the book lacked a resolution to the story It feels as though the final chapter was lost in the printer and so it just ended when it did I started off the story annoyed by Isobel, then she won me over after she witnessed the devastation of the Nazis and has a complete change of purpose, but then she g [...]
WAY better than I expected Not that I had any expectations, particularly, because I wasn t familiar with the author at all, but from what little I knew ahead of time I expected a sort of Squishy Period Piece About the Power of Family and Love And hoo boy The characters are excellently complicated, flawed in ways that are relatable but steer shy of cliche, and it s fascinating to watch them figure themselves out and grow even if you hate the direction in which that growth occurs I haven t read mu [...]
And Mr Gabriel does it again I started with The Designer when I was introduced to this author and that definitely left me wanting At first, I wasn t sure how Wish Me Luck was going to play out, but the story of three sisters, so different in personality and perspective, living through and surviving World War II in their own way, impacted me hard Gabriel left me heartbroken by the end I personally cant wait to read the second book.
Please read all of my reviews at ultraviolentlit Gabriel s novel follows the three Redcliffe sisters in the years leading up to World War II Beginning during the Spanish Civil War, two of the sisters are trapped in rural Spain, while one remains in England Isobel is the oldest, separated from her wealthy Spanish husband after the death of their child Her youngest sister Felicity is only nineteen, and she has recently decided to join a convent back in England as a nun When Isobel s mansion is req [...]
Captivating Historical fiction that make this a wonderful read The author writes in a way that makes it hard to put the book down I could do without the intimate sections and would prefer to leave the details to the imagination They are easy to skip through and continue reading.
The first book about the three Redcliffe sisters.Parallels here with the Mitford sisters An interesting story starting during the Spanish Civil War Three sisters and their complex relationships set with the backdrop of WW2 Love and betrayalspiesfascists and disillusionment I enjoyed getting to know the characters and am looking forward to the second book.
Enjoyable I love historical fiction and I love the stories from the WWII era Characters well fleshed out and I liked them so than others though This is book 1 in a 2 series book I enjoyed this book enough to read book 2
Evocative period pieceThe author successfully brings the sense of the times to this story, and his understanding of the complex and sometimes troubling relationship of siblings runs thru the story adding depth.
Really enjoyed the book, but the one very graphic scene came as a bit of a shock, and I felt was rather unnecessary and not in tone with the book Otherwise it would have been 4 stars.
Mr Gabriel is a wonderful storyteller His characters are so wonderful even when we are hating them This book is so good, I had to read the sequel.
Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye by Marius Gabriel is a story about the three Radcliffe sisters who take vastly different paths towards self discovery during World War II Isobel, is the fierce older sister who is very politically ambitious, possesses a ferocious tongue, but also harbors deep pain that prevents her from truly surrendering into any form of love, including the kind binds her to her sisters Felicity, the youngest of the three, is shy, introverted and very na ve about herself and [...]
A semi decent beginning, lost steam halfway through.I was really excited to read this book when I saw the reviews and read what it was about, but was surely disappointed when it actually came down to the reading of it I felt almost immediately upon beginning this book that I was being patronized by the author and the entire book had this obnoxious way of over explaining and reiterating details over and over again ad nauseam The characters themselves hardly evolved over the course of the novel wh [...]
The Redcliffe girls, Isobel, Chiara, and Felicity, are three British sisters in pre World War II Europe who each follow a path as individual as they are.Isobel is the oldest and fancies herself worldly She is married to Roberto Albaran, a Spaniard who ranks among the Nazi elite Isobel lost her infant son just before we meet her and around the same time realized that her husband could not deal with the loss of his son so he left her in their Spanish country home and took off for the high life As [...]
This was the first novel I have read by Marius Gabriel, and I was instantly hooked by his writing style This is a confident author, and his talent is evident in the effortless way he weaves the storyline around the characters and draws the reader along on their journey. The novel embarks on the closely woven stories of three sisters, connected by blood but very little else in terms of character and personality, initially set against the background of the Spanish Civil War before moving onto WWII [...]
I love reading novels set in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, so the cover and description of Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye by Marius Gabriel drew me in When I first started reading, I felt like I had started in the middle of a story instead of the beginning The author drops you into the story and you learn the backstory along the way I loved it It kept me reading The story is filled with an array of interesting characters, all connected, in one way or another, to the RedCliffe sisters, the main c [...]
Netgalley gave me a free copy so that I can give my honest review Three sisters, all as different as could be This makes for some squabbles and cold shoulders However, they are family and their love for each other keeps them going What I liked most about this book is possibly what I didn t care so much for. Each sister takes her own path through the book The narration distances us from the characters a bit But so much of it is leap frogging from one sister to the next in each chapter And, the flo [...]
This book starts off in the 1930 s in Spain during the Civil Wars, where we are introduced to 3 sisters Isobel, the oldest She is intrigued by Fascism and very proud of the fact that she has met Hitler Even though she comes from tragedy, she is an extremely selfish woman, and my least favourite sister The middle sister, Chiara lives in her little bubble in London collecting incredible art and being the lover of a distinguished quite secretive older gentleman She lives a life almost untouched by [...]
