When Rudolf goes on vacation to Ruritania, he discovers that he is the King s doppelganger When the King is kidnapped by his evil half brother, Duke Michael, Rudolf is persuaded to masquerade on the throne until the real King can be rescued While Rudolf s quick wit and steady nerves will help him to act as King, he is unprepared for the vagaries of the heart when he meets Princess Flavia.I enjoyed both the books in this duology so much The adventure, the espionage, the dashing heroes, the battle [...]
Two old fashioned adventure novels in one handy volume THE PRISONER OF ZENDA is a weird blend of classic literature and pulp fiction The plot, which, much like Mark Twain s THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, centers on a king s chance encounter with his doppelganger, is hackneyed, unrealistic and highly romanticized, but it makes for a fun ride nonetheless The second book, RUPERT OF HENTZAU, is of the same and not in a bad way Anthony Hope is a poor man s Alexandre Dumas, and the fact that his novels a [...]
The Prisoner of Zenda is regarded as one of the first and greatest of the adventure novel genre It is a compelling and fast paced story, well told, and interesting beyond the details of the story itself for the framework it establishes for the genre as a whole Rupert of Hentzau is the sequel, and pales by comparison, but it s nice to know how the story ends.
There are many things in this book that can be appealing the sword action, the setting with castles and kings, the deception vs duty role play, the humor and many other things. But, my favorite was the forbidden love the ending was outstanding and I shall not forget it I also found myself learning some new vocabulary, which is always a plus.
Five stars for The Prisoner of Zenda a nearly perfect adventure romance historical fiction One star for Rupert which is just awful If you have fond memories of Zenda DO NOT READ RUPERT You ll never be able to unread it Anthony Hope had one perfect novel in him, and that was that.
My first english novel and i m happy for this step in reading
My brother read these to me when I was in middle school, and I thought that they were lovely I have a difficult time, picturing an adventure of romance and suspense in a swashbuckling style that isn t a movie, but this is what I think of when I do Think of the Princess Bride, and you re headed in the right direction The first book follows the adventures of a gentleman who must impersonate the king, while rescuing the rightful king and defeating the villains, but in the process he falls in love w [...]
The Prisoner of Zenda was a superbly entertaining book It s an engrossing mix of court intrigue, suspense, action, romance, and adventure. The characters were nicely constructed and the writing style was captivating I thoroughly enjoyed it 5 5 stars.Rupert of Hentzau paled in comparison to The Prisoner of Zenda The characters were interesting but the plot was dull.I found the fact that it was narrated by a secondary character who doesn t experience most events firsthand confusing I usually enjoy [...]
I found we had the Heron hard cover edition of these two titles and I believe I read the Prisoner of Zenda when I was in my teens I picked it up to read both parts, partly because I remember my mother telling me that my paternal grandmother was reading this book whilst she was expecting my father and that was how he got his name I was surprised to find that she had chosen the villain of the piece s name as her favourite Perhaps the wicked streak goes deep in our family I did find the whole book [...]
Now I realize why I have always heard of The Prisoner of Zenda so frequently It is an amazing book The characters are imaginative and appealing The story is about an English gentleman who ends up impersonating the king of the fictional country of Ruritania in an emergency he just so happens to look identical due to European intermarriage The ensuing tale is quite compelling The plot twists, the uber bad guys, the humor are all signs of a well told tale The other story within this particular volu [...]
Ah, yes My literary diet must be fed at intervals with tales of dashing gentleman adventurers, and this served its purpose I may never get to live in this world but I can visit it as often as I like Thank goodness works such as these have been preserved as a refuge for all of us who at times desire to retreat into a honorable world.
So this was OK Not great I think standards for action were lower then Maybe I m wrong I thin Conan Doyle is much better And Rider Haggard is weirder Plus HG Wells Anyway, the sequel, Rupert of Hentzau, was a little grim, and good for that Kind of not a high point Also Penguin introduction was awful It reads like a book report.
I m terribly annoyed at Philip Pullman though for using these books as the basis for his book The Tin Princess Having read it then these are somewhat ruined I had an idea of what s going on, so than if I hadn t read his I do like Rudolf R though and wish I had such an honourable fellow like Flavia does.
I picked this one up mainly to read the second novel Rupert of Hentzau and wow, downer ending Also, Fritz, as a narrator, is much less compelling than Rudolf After a ridiculously small number of pages I skipped ahead to the ending The last few pages are actually fairly compelling.
Excellent traditional adventure story Having read When Knighthood Was in Flower, I much prefer this story.
This book was an exciting adventure worth reading I read it aloud to some of my children to help them get past the difficult language The final ending was a bit disappointing to one child but it depends on what you like.
Prisoner of Zenda wasn t bad, but the sequel was kind of boring And the main character didn t get what he most wanted, which was kind of depressing.
actually this is a special novel for form 3 students who live in East coast of Malaysia. The PMR examination is based on this romance novel.Quite interesting
great story telling
My favorite of all time
bru bce,,okey la
boring ,badhard times
There s nothing like a nice little vacation in Ruritania to cure what ails one.
this book i hav read at my high school
Best novel I read so far
These two books were the funnest I ve read in a long time I liked the first book better, but they are both great adventures, nothing really deep about the stories, just fun.
Lots of swashbuckling action The hero is believeable because he is not as good a swordsman as the villain, but thinks his way through and prevails.
This was a fun, fast read Nothing necessarily spectacular and nothing bad, like I said it was fun.
You gotta love Rudolf Fun read with low tech adventure Although slow at times, I enjoyed this book than I thought I would Ending of Rupert of Hentzau was greatt what I was expecting.
